Facebook lookalike audiences: how they work for lead generation
A Facebook lookalike audience finds new people who resemble a source audience you give Meta, such as a customer list. You need at least 100 people in the source, and Meta suggests 1,000 to 5,000. In Advantage+ campaigns a lookalike is a suggestion, not a limit, so the source you choose matters more than the percentage.
Ask five Meta advertisers whether lookalikes still work and you get five answers. In the UAE lead generation accounts I run (off-plan property, aesthetic clinics, business setup), the useful question is narrower: what does a Facebook lookalike audience actually do in Ads Manager today, and who should it be built from when the sale happens on WhatsApp or in a showroom, not on the website? Below is what Meta's help pages say, and how I use lookalikes in practice.
What a Facebook lookalike audience is
A lookalike audience reaches new people who share characteristics with your existing customers, and Meta builds it from the demographics, interests and behaviours of a source audience you choose (About Lookalike Audiences, Meta Business Help Centre).
The source can be a custom audience, such as a customer list or website visitors tracked by your Meta Pixel, or the people connected to your Page. Anyone already in the source is left out, so a lookalike is always new reach.
What you need before you build one
Meta's create page sets a floor of 100 people in the source, generally recommends 1,000 to 5,000, and allows up to 500 lookalikes from a single source (Create a Lookalike Audience, Meta Business Help Centre).
- The right permissions. Admin or advertiser access on the ad account to build from a custom audience, or admin access to the Page or Pixel to build from those.
- A source that is not a saved audience. Saved audiences cannot be used as a source.
- For lead form leads, the Leads Centre. Once you have generated more than 20 leads on Meta, you can build custom and lookalike audiences from them in the Leads Centre in Meta Business Suite, choosing the people you know converted or were good leads (Create a custom or Lookalike Audience in the Leads Centre).
How to create a lookalike audience
You create a lookalike in the Audiences section of Ads Manager, or from the audience settings while you build an ad set (Meta's create page above).
- Open Audiences and select Create audience, then Lookalike audience.
- Choose the source, or create a new one.
- Choose the size: how many lookalikes to create, and the percentage on the slider.
- Select Create audience.
The status shows Populating for up to three days. You can run ads straight away, but the audience grows as it fills. Audience not created usually means the source was too small. Once a lookalike is in an ad set, Meta refreshes its members every three days, according to the Marketing API lookalike documentation.
What the percentage means now
The percentage is a share of the population in your ad set's locations: 1% is the people most similar to your source, and a higher percentage gives a bigger, broader audience (Meta's Leads Centre page).
What changed is where that location comes from. You no longer pick a country when you create a lookalike. Meta uses the location settings of the ad set you add it to, so Audience Manager no longer shows an estimated size for a new lookalike; you see it in the ad set instead. Existing lookalikes are not affected (Meta's create page).
The Leads Centre slider runs from 1% to 10%, and the Marketing API accepts up to 20%. Meta also lets you create a set of non-overlapping lookalikes from one source, for example 0–1%, 1–3% and 3–6%, to bid differently on each tier.
This matters in the UAE, a small market next to the US or India: 1% of a UAE-only ad set is a small pool, and targeting one emirate narrows it further. Start with a wider percentage, or let Meta use the lookalike as a suggestion, instead of squeezing a 1% lookalike into one city.
How lookalikes work inside Advantage+
In sales, leads and app promotion campaigns, a lookalike goes in as an audience suggestion, which means Meta shows ads to people who match it and to other people when that is likely to improve performance (How to use custom or lookalike audiences, Meta Business Help Centre). You add it under Add suggestions, then Custom audience inclusions.
Advantage+ lookalike applies the same idea to the lookalike itself: Meta uses your source as a guide and may expand past the percentage you picked if it finds better results. It is switched on automatically for new, duplicated and draft ad sets that use lookalikes built from website, app or customer list custom audiences (About Advantage+ lookalike, Meta Business Help Centre).
To make the lookalike a hard limit, select Further limit the reach of your ads, choose the audience again and untick Use as a suggestion. Meta warns that this can mean you are no longer using Advantage+ audience, and the Audience section then shows Advantage+ off. The guide to Advantage+ leads campaigns covers which settings keep it on.
In practice, a lookalike tells Meta where to start looking, not where to stop. The real limits are the controls: location, minimum age, language and custom audience exclusions.
Which source to use when the sale happens offline
For lead generation, build the source from people who became customers or real prospects, not from everyone who filled in a form; Meta's own page says you may get better results from your best customers than from all of them (About Lookalike Audiences). My order, best first:
- Closed deals from your CRM. Buyers, patients who booked and paid, clients who signed. If you record deal value, add it as the customer value column of a customer list, and Meta can build a value-based lookalike from it.
- Qualified leads or booked consultations. A bigger list than closed deals, still filtered by your sales team.
- Leads marked as good in the Leads Centre, for lead form campaigns.
- All leads. Only when the lists above are too small, and only if most of your leads are genuine.
- Website visitors or Page engagers. The last resort. They include job seekers, competitors and people browsing with no budget.
What I see in UAE accounts. A lookalike I often find in audits is built from every website visitor or every lead form submission, including the time-wasters the sales team already rejected. Meta then finds more people like them. A smaller list of leads who became viewings, consultations or sales beats it.
Customer lists also go stale. Meta flags a list as Outdated when it has not been updated in over 30 days, and recommends at least 1,000 customers in a custom audience (How to use custom or lookalike audiences). For building those lists, see my guide to Meta custom audiences.
Are Facebook lookalike audiences going away?
No: Meta's help pages still explain how to create and use lookalike audiences, and none of the Meta pages I read for this guide announce their removal. They give you less control than before, and two more changes matter:
- Unused ones lapse. The Marketing API documentation marks a lookalike inactive when it has not been used in active ads for 90 days, and audiences unused for over two years are flagged for deletion.
- Sources face more checks. From 2 September 2025, Meta began rolling out tighter restrictions on custom audiences that suggest health conditions or financial status, and a lookalike is only as usable as its source.
So "lookalikes are dead" overstates it. A lookalike is now less a targeting control and more a signal, and still worth sending when the source is good.
Where lookalikes are restricted for UAE advertisers
Meta limits or removes lookalike audiences for some ads about housing, employment and financial products and services (About Lookalike Audiences), and three cases come up in UAE accounts.
- Property campaigns that reach buyers abroad. These limits come with Meta's special ad categories, which depend on where your ads are shown. A UAE-only campaign can usually stay out of the category and keep lookalikes; a campaign aimed at buyers in Europe, the US or Canada cannot. The details are in my guide to the housing special ad category.
- Clinics. Because Meta now flags audiences that suggest health conditions, build clinic sources from all booked consultations rather than from a list defined by a condition or treatment. Read Meta's health and wellness rules for UAE clinics before you upload patient data.
- Young audiences. If your ads can reach people under 18 (or older in some countries), expect fewer targeting options.
When I use a lookalike, and when I leave it out
My rule: add a lookalike when you have a clean source of real customers or qualified leads, and leave it out when your only source is people you would not want more of.
- Use one for prospecting when you have a CRM list of 1,000 or more closed deals or qualified leads, or a smaller list of very good ones. Add it as a suggestion.
- Leave it out when your best list is under 100 people (Meta cannot build it) or is mostly junk leads. Run Advantage+ audience without it and fix your lead quality signal first, for example by sending qualified leads back through the Conversions API.
- Do not use one for retargeting. A lookalike excludes the people in its source, so it cannot reach the people you want to bring back. Use the custom audience itself.
The set-up order
- Export the right people from your CRM: closed deals first, then qualified leads, with deal value if you have it.
- Upload them as a customer list and check the match score.
- Create the lookalike and add it as a suggestion in a prospecting ad set, with location, minimum age and customer exclusions as controls.
- Test it. Meta recommends A/B testing Advantage+ audience for almost all campaign types. Run the lookalike suggestion against no suggestion and judge on qualified leads in the CRM, not cost per lead.
- Refresh the list monthly so it never shows as Outdated.
If you would rather have someone build and test this for you, it is part of my Meta Ads management.
